Nicholas was born April 15th, 2009 with kidney failure. A blockage in his urinary tract while still in the womb caused urine to back up into his kidneys causing severe damage. At one years old, one kidney was removed because it was non functioning while the other was at about 25 percent. He was already in stage 4 kidney failure at this time. The one surviving kidney surprised us all and managed to keep going, although with much intervention with medicine, until recently.
Nicholas just completed a surgery which put a catheter in his chest so that he can begin dialysis treatments. These treatments will clean his blood of the toxins and impurities that would would otherwise remain in his body because of the failing kidney. These treatments will need to be done three days a week and depending on the blood work, could take up to 2 – 4 hours each session. The dialysis treatments will be performed at Boston Children’s Hospital.
